The Voice Gym
Work with the body and vocal practice to cultivate attention and continuity in research.
Theatre is at the heart of my artistic and pedagogical life. On stage, voice research meets the body, the text and listening; this experience informs my work with performers and those who study with me, at Spatium Vocis and beyond.

I am Francesca Della Monica, a singer, vocal performer, composer, vocal dramaturg and voice teacher. Theatre is central to my work: through encounters with actors, directors and texts, artistic creation and pedagogy nourish one another. My work brings together philosophy, music and vocal practice in relation to the body, space and the listener.
I studied in Liliana Poli’s Chamber Music for Singers class at the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini in Florence and graduated in Singing from the Conservatorio Girolamo Frescobaldi in Ferrara. I hold a degree in Philosophy from the University of Florence and a specialisation in Archaeology from the University of Siena.
My musical training, together with my philosophical and archaeological education, has shaped my distinctive approach to investigating the voice: these fields inform the perspective from which I conduct my research into vocality. In textual study and, in particular, in giving voice to dramatic texts, it has been essential to excavate the different layers and semantic horizons of the text.
Twentieth-century and contemporary music, experimental practices and the avant-garde have accompanied my work. This path has led me to meet and collaborate with composers and musicians including Sylvano Bussotti, John Cage, Giancarlo Cardini, Aldo Clementi, Marco Betta, Marco Di Bari, Armando Gentilucci, Roberto Fabbriciani, Stefano Scodanibbio, Daniele Lombardi, Paolo Castaldi, Giuseppe Chari, Davide Mosconi, Giuliano Zosi, Pietro Grossi, Vittorio Fellegara, Francesco La Licata, Andrea Nicoli, Riccardo Vaglini, Gabriele Marangoni, Damiano Meacci and Mauro Lupone.
From 1987 to 1997 I was organising secretary of GAMO — Gruppo Aperto Musica Oggi.
A central relationship in my work is my artistic partnership with Federico Tiezzi and Sandro Lombardi, developed over more than thirty years of collaboration with the Lombardi Tiezzi company.
In 2017, I founded Associazione APERTA together with actor and playwright Maurizio Donadoni and musician and educator Ernani Maletta.
My approach is anthropological: I investigate the origins of vocal practice in all its aspects, bringing physical and cultural anthropology together.
My research encompasses traditional and experimental vocal techniques, unconventional notation and the soundscape. In 2018, I registered my method of voice maieutics and pedagogy, Vocazione spatium vocis. In 2024, I was appointed an honorary member of GIVA, Gruppo Italiano Vocologi Artistici.

Work with the body and vocal practice to cultivate attention and continuity in research.
A programme exploring the many semantic horizons the voice traverses in spoken expression, textual study and singing.
Research encounters and pedagogical programmes for actors, singers, dramaturgs, teachers, dancers and voice professionals, also open to anyone interested in exploring the possibilities of the voice.
For the past two years, professional training courses have been running around my philosophy of vocal work, for those who wish to work with this approach.
Over the past year, a professional training course on reading and giving voice to the text has also begun, connected to The layers of the voice and the study of the many semantic horizons traversed by vocality.
Both programmes have welcomed guest scholars, actors, educators, musicians and musicologists.

“The voice has not removed me from everyday life. Each time, it has taught me to return to it, transfiguring it.”
Francesca Della Monica
Pistoia
Spatium Vocis is my physical space for study and encounters in Pistoia: a place to sustain voice research and training. It is home to the pedagogical initiatives of A voce spiegata.
I want it to be a meeting place for those who wish to deepen, experiment with and share a practice. Here, pedagogy grows alongside thought and artistic experience.

I work in vocal dramaturgy, supporting performers as they prepare their voices for the stage. My artistic partnership with Federico Tiezzi and Sandro Lombardi, whom I consider my teachers, spans more than thirty years of collaboration with the Lombardi Tiezzi company and is a central thread in my work with the voice on stage.
In Italy, I have collaborated with directors including Federico Tiezzi, Gabriele Lavia, Carlo Cecchi, Massimo Popolizio, Dario Fo — whose personal vocal coach I was — Mauro Avogadro, Giancarlo Cauteruccio, Roberto Bacci, Sandro Garzella, Gianfranco Pedullà, Massimo Verdastro, Massimiliano Civica, Leo Muscato, Paul Curran, Andrea de Rosa, Serena Sinigaglia, Lina Prosa, Marco Carniti, Marta Cuscunà, Guido Ceronetti, Paolo Rosa and Giovanni Scandella.
Encounters in dance and performance include Roberta Gelpi, Chiara Bersani, Marco D’Agostin, Gloria Dorliguzzo, Maguy Marin, Virgilio Sieni, Lindsay Kemp and Paulo Chamone.
I teach in the acting schools of the Piccolo Teatro in Milan, the Teatro Nazionale in Genoa, the Teatro Stabile in Turin, the Teatro Mercadante in Naples and the Accademia del Dramma Antico in Syracuse.
I teach on the Master di Vocologia Artistica, directed by Franco Fussi in Ravenna and organised by Almatu S.r.l.. My teaching also includes ARTA at the Cartoucherie in Paris. From 2007 to 2013, I taught musical dramaturgy at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera.

Every programme begins with the encounter with performers, their vocal possibilities and the needs of creation.
With Ernani Maletta I share an artistic and pedagogical partnership and a deep, fraternal friendship: a relationship of research and creation that takes shape in pedagogical and artistic projects in Italy and Brazil. Voice and theatre are the ground of our dialogue and the work we develop together.

My collaboration with Gabriel Villela, an artist of extraordinary theatrical imagination and poetic sensitivity, is a treasured encounter in my Brazilian journey. The dialogue with his theatrical universe has opened fertile ground for research into the voice, the text and performers’ expressive possibilities.
The collaboration encompasses vocal dramaturgy, the spatialisation of the voice and work on the text, in dialogue with performers and Brazilian companies.
For L’empireo, the 2025 production is listed, preceded by the staged reading in 2023.
An artistic partnership also expressed through the Compagnia Verdastro/Della Monica, which we founded together in 1999.

Even when they seem distant from the voice, their connection with it is, for me, profound.
